CHAMPION: Diego Forlan with the first ever Europa League trophy.

Europe League was held for the first time in the 2009/10-season and Atletico Madrid got the first trophy. The tournament has changed many times from the original Messeby Cup to the UEFA Cup, and finally Europa League.

48 teams participate, and they will play in 12 groups. The two best teams of each group will advance to the knock-out rounds. The eight teams that end third in the Champions League will also go to the Europa League knock outs that will start in February 2011. The final is set to be played in 18 May in Dublin.
